The Video Platform Provides Users Control to Limit AI-Generated Videos in Personal Streams

Users will soon have a new feature that permits them to lessen the quantity of artificial intelligence-produced videos appearing in their feeds. This initiative comes as the platform disclosed that it now features over 1 billion AI-generated clips.

Testing and Rollout

The update is undergoing trials over the next few weeks before a full-scale rollout. This advancement coincides with a rise in content created by AI, fueled by emerging video-generation tools.

AI Proliferation Online

Studies have shown that approximately a tenth of the fastest-growing video streams on another major platform primarily display clips produced artificially. A large amount of this material is considered “AI slop”, a phrase for substandard, mass-produced content that is often illogical or bizarre.

“We know from our community that many people enjoy content created using AI tools, including AI artwork to educational videos, and we aim to provide users the ability to adjust the amount of that, based on their own preferences,” stated a spokesperson.

AI on the Platform

The platform announced that there are presently 1.3bn videos on its app identified as AI-generated. Collectively, over 100 m media items are added to the service each day, making AI content a relatively small portion of its overall inventory.

User Control Features

Viewers will be capable of decrease or raise the volume of AI content they view by accessing the topic control setting in the app and selecting the AI content topic. Additional categories that are already be adjusted under the tool encompass politics, fashion, cosmetics, and dance.

Content Labeling and Policies

TikTok’s rules require creators to label lifelike AI-generated content, and it prohibits harmful AI impersonations of celebrities or emergencies. Any realistic AI-generated clip that is without a tag can be removed under its user guidelines.

In addition, the app will from now on attach an AI-generated watermark to content made using its built-in AI features, or flagged by an cross-platform project for spotting content made by AI. This step is designed to help prevent users from trying to evade the tagging system.

AI Literacy Programs

TikTok is also establishing a $2m awareness program for experts and groups to develop informative material about responsible artificial intelligence. This program will support educational bodies dedicated to teaching coding and technology.

Content Safety Approach

TikTok has justified its moderation strategy, amid discussion over intentions to make redundant hundreds of content moderators in the United Kingdom. It is set to eliminate hundreds of positions in its user protection department in the UK capital, with trade unions and online safety experts expressing worry that humans are being replaced by automated systems.

A trust and safety lead explained that people-led review would still have a role, but automated tools can protect employees by removing the most graphic content prior to it has to be seen by people. The platform announced a 76% decrease in explicit and harmful content handled by safety staff over the past year due to intervention by its automated systems.

“We think that it’s essential to balance people and machines to keep the platform safe,” the official commented. “We’ll have humans as integral to the approach, but we also think it’s highly necessary to minimize viewing of harmful content as rapidly, which is where a lot of the machine support is making a difference work at speed.”
